When we met Maman Ogui, we were immediately touched by her kindness and the purity of her heart. Her story was beyond touching. It was as inspiring as the work she has been doing with the orphans at her orphanage for the last two decades. Her father was an orphan and had made it his life mission to help others achieve their destiny by sharing with them whatever was available to him (food, shelter, and education whenever possible). She grew up watching him doing just that, and she decided that following his footsteps was the best way to honor the legacy of her late father.
She started welcoming babies and young children that have either been abandoned in addition to those that have lost their parents into her home nearly 20 years ago. Many of these young vulnerable souls went in life to become successful and started their own families. When we got there for the first time, we found a place full of love and peace. She wanted us to help with some renovation work. We helped renovate the entire orphanage in December 2020. While there we noticed that they had no running water. They were getting their water through a well and were using electrical power to pump it out of the well. This in return caused the electricity bill to go up to a point where the orphanage could not afford it. The last one we found was about $3,000. In fact, they had to often make choices between paying the utility bills and buying food.
We took action and after months of careful planning, we decided to help deepen the well in the first place and use the solar-powered pump and energy to provide water to the entire orphanage.
